Dawson shows definitively that it is the latter: for all the talk about a new post-racial America, the fundamental realities of American racism—and the problems facing black political movements—have not changed. Bringing his account up to the present with a thoughtful account of the rise of the Tea Parties and the largely successful "blackening" of the president, Dawson ultimately argues that black politics remains weak—and that achieving the dream of racial and economic equality will require the sort of coalition-building and reaching across racial divides that have always marked successful political movements.

Excellent overview of contemporary black politics

Not In Our Lifetimes is one of the few books written about contemporary black politics that takes the neoliberal turn seriously. The first of Dawson's books to be written for a lay audience, it is eminently readable and well-argued. The final word on this period hasn't been written because we are still in the middle of it. But I believe Not In Our Lifetimes will stand the test of time.

A Black Panther in heat!

No, the author is not a Black Panther, at least I don't think he is, but the title of this review gives you an idea of his objectivity. The book is one long grievance scream, droning on page after page of examples portraying government, white civil society, the media, etc. as anti-black either willfully or unconsciously. This isn't academics, it's neurosis unleashed. Undoubtedly the author could be the nap-matching champion of the world! If you are an angry hater looking for justification, BUY THIS BOOK! Believe me, even if you paid a hundred dollars for it, you'll get more than your money's worth. However, if your looking for a reasoned and objective evaluation of African American progress in the last half century and current political realities, well, all I can say is that if spend even one cent for this book you will have been over charged.
