About the Author
Professor "James W. Nilsson" taught at Iowa State University for 39 years. Since retiring from Iowa State, he has been a visiting professor at Notre Dame, California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo, and the United States Air Force Academy. In 1962, he co-authored (with R.G. Brown) "Introduction to Linear Systems Analysis" (John Wiley & Sons). In 1968, he authored "Introduction to Circuits, Instruments, and Electronics" (Harcourt Brace and World). Professor Nilsson received a Standard Oil Outstanding Teacher Award in 1968, the IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1992, and the McGraw-Hill Jacob Millman Award in 1995. In 1990, he was elected to the rank of Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Professor "Susan A. Riedel" has been a member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Marquette University since 1981. She also holds a clinical research appointment in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and was a visiting professor in the Bioengineering Unit at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, as a Fulbright Scholar during the 1989-1999 academic year. She has received two awards for teaching excellence at Marquette, and was recognized for her research contributions with an award from the Chicago Unit of the Shriner's Hospitals.

My daughter loves this book! She is four years old and is enthralled by the fantastic illustrations as well as the engaging saga of little Duke Devlin. I have read it over and over to her and I love the story and illustrations as well. She has shared the book with several of her cousins who have also thoroughly enjoyed it. Great children's books are hard to find and Duke Devlin the Daring Dogie is definitely one of those rare gems. A Great book!

Wonderful Book!

A charming hero on an exciting adventure, a a motherless calf who triumphs over adversity to find his cow family. It captures the attention of children, and adults. My grandchildren can attest to that. And who knew a cow could be so lovable and expressive. The illustrations are masterful and delightful. Well done!

Read This Book and Make Values Stick!

The Values Book is an excellent source of information and activities to encourage values in your child. The authors cite changes in modern culture and use fun, creative methods to instill traditional values. Each chapter begins with a familiar rhyme recognizing a particular value. The authors then define the value, and discuss why it is important in a child's life. Ways to talk about the value are included, and activities to reinforce the value are suggested. At the end of each chapter, extra resources are listed concerning the value discussed. In an easy-to-read format, the book discusses 16 values like loyalty, respect, patience and cooperation. Parents will appreciate advice for ways children may react to values, and teachers will be pleased to find helpful hints to celebrate values in the classroom. Children will benefit from the home activities, like growing a garden and making up new solutions to problems seen on television. In addition to improving their grasp on teaching specific principles, parents themselves may find they have gained a better respect for values. Through helping children incorporate values in their everyday lives, parents will play a key role model for making the teachings stick with their children for years.

The Values Book

Except for the rampant nostalgia for 1910, when times were "simpler" and apparently nobody was concerned with teaching their children values, because back then it was naturally absorbed into every child's brain because of the stellar air quality, complete lack of social violence, and excellent parenting skills [please see the first point for parents in nearly every chapter if you have no clue to what I am referring), book was pretty decent.

The layout was smooth and organized with ideas for a variety of situations. Each of the values that were covered are applicable and important, while the points and activities were thoughtful.

My only wish is that the 'Thoughts for Parents' sections didn't assume that everybody reading it had no intrapersonal skills and that it stopped relying on a nostalgic fallacy. Things weren't necessarialy awesome in the past, we just talk about the craptastic parts a bit more openly and visibly.

About the Author
Dr. Michael Fossel earned both his PhD and MD from Stanford University, where he taught neurobiology and research methods. Winner of a National Science Foundation fellowship, he was a clinical professor of medicine for almost three decades, the executive director of the American Aging Association, and the founding editor of Rejuvenation Research. In 1996, he wrote the first book on the telomerase theory of aging, Reversing Human Aging, describing the medical aspects of extending human telomeres, reversing aging, and curing age-related disease. In 2004, he authored the magisterial academic textbook, Cells, Aging, and Human Disease, and in 2011, he coauthored The Immortality Edge, a bestselling discussion of the potential for extending the human lifespan. He currently teaches The Biology of Aging at Grand Valley State University.

The world's foremost expert on the clinical use of telomerase for age-related diseases, Michael has lectured at the National Institute for Health and the Smithsonian Institute, and continues to lecture at universities, institutes, and conferences throughout the world. He has appeared on Good Morning America, ABC 20/20, NBC Extra, Fox Network, CNN, BBC, Discovery Channel, and regularly on NPR. He is currently working to bring telomerase to human trials for Alzheimer’s disease.

Get excited about this!

As an aging physician(ophthalmologist) who has been interested in aging, that is, how to delay it, and if possible reverse it, I have studied every claim to these ends and indulged in the few which seemed reasonable. Dr. Fossel, who has written the only medical textbook on cellular aging in existence, explains how telomere loss leads to increasing cellular senescence and eventual death,with the subsequent death of the organism. He cites some lower organisms which never die until eaten because telomeres are maintained. Most significantly, he explains how activation of the dormant gene in our cells for the enzyme which builds telomeres will reverse cellular aging, and therefore prevent a host of degenerate diseases. It has already been done in the lab on tissues and even in some artificially aged lower animals.

This book is written for educated laymen as well as physicians. It is to the point, logical, and In my opinion compelling. Very well written. The explanation on how telomere loss leads to specific diseases alone is worth the read. There is even a reasonable speculation of why evolution would 'select' death for all of us individual organisms.

This is something to get excited about! It looks like the 'real McCoy' of age reversal! Read it and gain hope!

Very readable and critical work that will impact us as well as our society in a surprisingly near future.

Let me preface my remarks by saying I have a Ph.D. in physics and have been working in research for 25 years. I am skeptical of most things and objective to the point where it bugs my family. Now.... I was lucky enough to grab one of the first copies of this book. I have already read it and loaned it to my uncle. Dr. Fossel has been working in this area for 30 years and knows it forward and backward. What he covers in here is outstanding and surprising! Surprising because the science is straightforward, the implications staggering and the media, governments and society in general aren't going nuts over it. The problem is that we have all heard the snake oil claims for herbs, suppliments, ... that will cure us of everything and make us kids again. Those claims have jaded us. Then comes this book on the basic science of what is happening and no sales pitch. This is the book to read to understand why we age and what it means. Someday maybe this will turn into a fountain of youth drug but for now this book is real, objective information on aging and how it affects us all. If you have an interest in why we age but aren't up for technical journal articles then this is the book for you.

A real near revolution

Today aging is interpreted in two very different ways with many opposing assumptions and implications. The old paradigm defines aging as the cumulative effect of various inevitable degenerative processes that can be mitigated but never completely controlled. The new paradigm considers aging as a physiological phenomenon with specific mechanisms genetically determined and regulated. This, in principle, allows to consider methods that might control aging even completely.
The book by Michael Fossel, The Telomerase Revolution (BenBella Books, 2015), is clearly on the side of the new paradigm. The book traces, in a simplified way but with many enrichments, the concepts expounded in the well-known authoritative and documented textbook by the same author [1]. It describes, in a popular way, how we age through mechanisms based on the telomere-telomerase system and the consequent progressive decrease both of cell turnover and of cell efficiency.
In the arguments of the book, there is also a net distinction between aging and the common diseases caused by wrong lifestyles whose effects increase in proportion to age. While these diseases can be prevented by avoiding incorrect lifestyles, the same measures are totally ineffective to slow down aging. It is also true, however, that erroneous lifestyles both cause distinct diseases and accelerate and complicate aging effects, a common cause of confusion between aging and age-related diseases.
Fossel's description of aging mechanisms is linear and consistent and should allow the understanding of complex concepts – some of them in contrast with widespread and accepted ideas - even to those who are not biology scholars or are unfamiliar with the medical or scientific world.
Also, and this is the aspect that will be the most attractive for a much wider audience of readers, it opens the discussion – not in charlatan but in real terms! - on how it would be possible to stop or reverse the process of aging.
Since 1998, it is well known how to reverse completely aging at the cellular level by well-known experiments of telomerase activation [2-4]. Similar experiments in the whole animal are few but extremely promising [5, 6]. The author highlights how a factor that thwarts further progress on this way is an unreasonable or at least exaggerated fear that telomerase activation procedures are carcinogenic. This fear arises from the consideration that, for the old paradigm, mechanisms genetically regulated that determine aging are impossible. Consequently, the sophisticated mechanism, based on the telomere-telomerase system, which regulates and limits progressively cell replication and efficiency, must have some justification. The only explanation that has been proposed is that such a mechanism is a general defense against cancer and so the reactivation of telomerase would alter an essential defense. This erroneous and untenable explanation [7] is openly opposed by the author who, instead, to counter aging, proposes drugs or genetic interventions for the stimulation or reactivation of telomerase.
The book, is challenging and breaks old patterns built on paradigms that appear more and more inconsistent and wrong. To define the author a heretic is a compliment addressed to him, who, besides, is fully aware of this, as it is showed by a dedication formulated in his main work: "Great ideas Janus'd pivot on the cusp of history: they are looking forward obviously foolish, looking backwards they appear foolishly obvious. We are doubly blind." [1]
In this positive critique of the book, however, it is necessary to specify what I consider its main limit.
The text does not expound or explore a series of experimental evidence and theoretical arguments that are against the old paradigm and in support of the new [8]. The author understands and explains beautifully aging mechanisms, but the evolutionary roots of the phenomenon and its necessary framework in the broad category of phenoptosis (sacrifice of an individual on the basis of supra-individual selective mechanisms) [9] are not within its investigation or familiarity. Maybe this would have increased the difficulty of reading for a non-specialist reader and increased the opposition and the criticisms of those who are anchored to the old paradigm.
Other minor criticisms are possible but they are of little importance for the meaning and the overall value of the book that is to disseminate and support disruptive ideas supported by known empirical data: another step in a scientific revolution in action, with wide consequences for our future.
In short, this is a book that should be read and meditated.

About the Author

Richard T. Wright is Professor Emeritus of Biology at Gordon College in Massachusetts, where he taught environmental science for 28 years. He earned a B.A. from Rutgers University and a M.A. and Ph.D. in biology from Harvard University. For many years Wright received grant support from the National Science Foundation for his work in marine microbiology, and in 1981, he was a founding faculty member of Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies in Michigan, where he also served as Academic Chairman for 11 years. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Au Sable Institute, and the American Association for the Advancement Scientific Affiliation. In 1996, Wright was appointed a Fulbright Scholar to Daystar University in Kenya, where he taught for tow months. He is a member of many environmental organizations, including The Nature Conservancy, Habitat for Humanity, the Union of Concerned Scientists, the Audubon Society, and a supporting member of the Trustees of Reservations. Wright continues to be actively involved in writing and speaking about the environment. He and his wife Ann recently moved to Byfield, Massachusetts, and they drive a Toyota Camry hybrid vehicle as a means of reducing their environmental impact. Wright spends his spare time hiking, fishing, golfing, and enjoying his three children and seven grandchildren.

As we plunge into a new century and a new millennium, the environment is being called on to supply the growing needs of an expanding human population in the developing countries and increasing affluence in the developed countries. In many areas, we are already taking more from Earth's systems than they can provide in a sustainable fashion. Our ecological footprint weighs heavily on Earth's natural resources—the "ecosystem capital" that provides the goods and services that sustain human life and economic well-being. Also, there are still billions of people who are not adequately housed, fed, or provided with health care or a paying job. Yet we must, as soon as possible, make a transition to a sustainable civilization, one in which a stable human population recognizes the finite limits of Earth's systems to produce resources and absorb wastes, and acts accordingly. This is hard to picture at present, but it is the only future that makes any sense. If we fail to achieve it by our deliberate actions, the natural world will impose it on us in highly undesirable ways.

Environmental science stands at the interface between humans and Earth and explores the interactions and relations between them. This relationship will need to be considered in virtually all future decision making. This text considers a full spectrum of views and information in an effort to establish a solid base of understanding and a sustainable formula for the future. What you have in your hands is a readable guide and up-to-date source of information that will help you to explore the issues in more depth. It will also help you to connect them to a framework of ideas and values that will equip you to become part of the solution to many of the environmental problems confronting us.

Because I believe that learning how to live in the environment is one of the most important subjects in any student's educational experience, I have made every effort to put in your hands a book that will help the study of environmental science come alive.

A Guide to the Ninth Edition of Environmental Science Overview

The ninth edition is more than just an update. The main new feature of this edition is the extensive use of six unifying themes that help the reader to focus on the significance of the many issues that are presented. The themes of sustainability, sound science, and stewardship are retained from the eighth edition and now identified as strategic themes. To these I have added three more themes, which I call integrative themes: ecosystem capital, policy and politics, and globalization. These six themes provide important threads linking the different subjects and chapters of the text. To make the connections clear, I have added at the end of each chapter a section called Revisiting the Themes, where each theme is discussed and connected to the chapter matter. In this edition, I continue to provide a balance between pure science and the political, social, and historical perspectives of environmental affairs. I am also careful to reflect differences in interpretation of environmental concerns where they exist, while maintaining the standard of sound science for judging those concerns.

Most important, the ninth edition reflects the changing environmental scene in the United States, as well as in the rest of the world. Information from new books, journal articles, and Internet-based reports from governmental and nongovernmental organizations has been incorporated into every chapter. New illustrations have been introduced—69 new photos and 49 new diagrams.

Each chapter opens with a case study or an illustrative story to catch the reader's interest and lead into the chapter's subject. A new feature in this edition is the Guest Essays; these provide challenging insights from the perspective of professionals in their fields. Another new feature is the companion CD, Global City. This is a set of 9 exercises built around I* concept of a large city struggling with many of the environmental problems presented in the book: soil erosion, water pollution, energy use, urban sprawl, and municipal waste, among others. Those familiar with the eighth edition will see a new, crisp layout, with the use of many more subheads. These enable students to read the text in clearly identified bite-sized segments.

Introduction

After taking a look at the plight of Easter Island, Chapter 1 (Introduction: Toward a Sustainable Future) presents a global environmental picture, starting with the concept of the ecological footprint. In discussing ecosystem decline, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is presented as a new effort to understand the links between human well-being and the goods and services provided by ecosystems. The chapter then introduces the three strategic themes: sustainability—the practical goal that our interactions with the natural world should be working toward; stewardship—the ethical and moral framework that should inform our public and private actions; and sound science—the basis for our understanding of how the world works and how human systems interact with it. Each theme is thoroughly defined and explored. Following this, the three integrative themes are introduced in depth: ecosystem capital—the natural and managed ecosystems that provide essential goods and services to human enterprises; policy and politics—the human decisions that determine what happens to the natural world and the political processes that lead to those decisions; and globalization—the accelerating interconnectedness of human activities, ideas, and cultures. A new Earth Watch essay critiques Bjorn Lomborg's controversial book, The Skeptical Environmentalist.

Part One. Ecosystems: Basic Units of the Natural World

Part One (Chapters 2-4) explores natural ecosystems—what they are, how they function, and how they change. I no longer employ the five Sustainability Principles (an approach that has outlived its usefulness), although the actual processes they drew attention to are still very much in place. Chapter 5 (Ecosystems and Evolutionary Change) from the older editions has been removed, but material on natural selection and speciation has been kept in Chapter 4 (Ecosystems: How They Change). Some of the new material that appears in these chapters includes the work of the Heinz Center on the State of the Nation's Ecosystems, the concepts of top-down and bottom-up regulation of populations, and a guest essay by biologist David Lahti on the village weaverbird. The end of Chapter 4 returns to the idea of the ecological footprint to address the issue of human carrying capacity.

Part Two. The Human Population

Chapter 5 (The Human Population: Dimensions) first looks at the dynamics of the human population. The pressures on natural systems as a result of the growth of that population are examined, with a focus on the differences between the developed and developing countries. The chapter ends with the demographic transition—the shift from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates that has brought stable populations to the industrialized world. Chapter 6 (Population and Development) describes the developing countries' difficulties in moving through this transition. A major new focus in the material on development is the Millennium Development Goals, presented in the context of the Human Development Report of 2002. Development aid and the World Bank are explored in detail, and the political controversy over the so-called "gag rule" is detailed. A guest essay by economist Chris Barren discusses his concept of the "poverty trap" in the context of Kenyan subsistence farmers and natural resource management.

Part Three. Renewable Resources

Part Three (Chapters 7-11) addresses the science and policies surrounding our use of the natural resources of water, soil, agriculture, and wildlife. Issues concerning the use of such resources in food production, forest growth, and fisheries management are examined in light of increasing population growth and increasing pressure on those resources: again, we all-the-while keep our eyes on sustainability. Some examples of issues receiving a new emphasis are: the Aral Sea as a major environmental disaster, the "water wars" of the Western United States, a challenge to the conventional approach to measuring erosion (GLASOD), a detailed look at genetically modified food and the controversies it has generated, the Klamath River controversy, restoration of the Everglades ecosystem, the Bush administration's "Healthy Forests initiative," and a -new Glo...

ROBIN BUSS's TRANSLATION from PENGUIN CLASSICS

This review is for those who've already decided they want to read The Count of Monte Cristo (you won't regret it!), and don't know which version to get.

Short answer: see review title, duh!

The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite book, and I've read several translations, both abridged and unabridged.

TRANSLATION
The Buss translation is the most modern, and reads most fluidly. A quick example comparing this translation with the one found on Project Gutenberg:

PG - His wife visited for him, and this was the received thing in the world, where the weighty and multifarious occupations of the magistrate were accepted as an excuse for what was really only calculated pride...

BUSS - His wife visited on his behalf; this was accepted in society, where it was attributed to the amount and gravity of the lawyer's business -- when it was, in reality, deliberate arrogance...

Buss's work reads like the book was written in English. The two or so times that the work is nearly untranslatable, Buss makes a footnote about it (eg, an insinuated insult using the formal "vous" instead of the familiar "tu"). Other translations just skip the subtlety. The most common translation out there (uncredited in my version) reads like a swamp. Trust me, get Buss.

ABRIDGED V UNABRIDGED
Abridged versions of this book rarely say "abridged." You can tell by the size: abridged is 500-700 pages, unabridged is 1200-1400 pages. Go for the unabridged.

The abridged version is VERY confusing! Pruning 1200 pages down to 600 leaves a lot of plot on the cutting room floor. Suddenly, arriving at dinner are 4 new characters; it's very tiring to try to keep up with the hole-ridden story of the abridged versions. And you know where the holes are? Publishers "clean up" the book by omitting the affairs, illegitimate children, homosexuality, hashish trips, etc.

As an added bonus in the Penguin Classics edition, there's a wonderful appendix bursting with footnotes to explain all the 19th century references, and a quick guide to the rise and fall of Napoleon (crucial to the politics in the story).

Absolutely the best book ever

This book is an example of perfect fiction writing. Its length is 5 times the average book and it still was not long enough! The story, the characters, the settings and the emotions enthralled me for days. I could not put it down. I was living the book as it took me to France, the mediterranean, Italy and every home, cave and mode of transportation detailed in exemplary fashion by Dumas. Without giving away the intrigue... This book is the story of a wronged young sailor and follows his life as he is imprisoned due to the actions of 3 jealous men. He lives in prison for an extended period of time, meeting a man who gives him hope and a life beyond his dreams. He escapes the horrid dungeon and seeks revenge on the 3 men who took away everything he ever hoped for. This book is amazing, it will not disappoint anyone. I cannot believe I did not read it before. Thank you Kindle for allowing me the pleasure of reading this book for free, however, it is worth paying for and sharing with anyone who loves to read.

I never in a million years would have thought I would love this book! I never thought I would like something like this book. I never thought I would fall in love with Dantes! I never thought I would have so much anger, sadness, despair and happiness in this book! I never thought, did I!

Edmond Dantes was a wonderful man of 19-years-old. He had a woman he loved and was going to marry named Mercedes. A loving father. And he was going to be captain of the wonderful ship, Pharaon.

The the jealous b*stards or just b*stards in general ruined life for Dantes.

1. Danglars
2. Fernand
3. Villefort

I hate these men with such a passion I just wanted someone to kill their evil selves.

All of the jerks had a hand in putting Dantes in prison for 14 effing years! Yeah! For what? For NOTHING!

Dantes was in such despair he was going to starve himself to death. I can't even!

Then one night Dantes hears a scratching sound and soon realizes someone is tunneling. Dantes decides to tunnel as well. At some point the two of them tunnel to each other. Dantes gets to meet Abbe Faria, the mad man (so they say) in the cell next door. Abbe Faria thinks he's tunneling out to freedom but he made a miscalculation. But Dantes and Abbe devise a new plan and this takes some years to do all of this tunneling. But the Abbe is old and sick and having seizures. He's not going to be able to make it so Dantes waits with him. He is like another father figure to Dantes. And who in the hell but Dantes would wait and not leave his friend. Because Dantes is good and kind and loving.

Abbe Faria is also the one that opens Dantes eyes to who the culprits were that put him in jail. Poor Dantes couldn't see this at the time and he couldn't read what we were reading so he had no clue. Abbe Faria also tells Dantes about tons of gold and jewels that he has hidden on the island of Monte Cristo. He makes Dantes remember everything about getting there and where to find the treasure.

Unfortunately, Abbe Faria dies and it was so sad. Dantes was so grief stricken over his friend. Dantes decided to leave then as he had nothing else to stay for and he put himself in Abbe Faria's place all wrapped up waiting to be buried. Well, he doesn't actually get buried but thrown out to sea and luckily Dantes managed to save himself.

We go on to read of the tale of how Dantes get to Monte Cristo and soon he is beyond rich and he is so smart and reading to get IT DONE!

And Dantes doesn't just run off and kill people. He's smart. He tears down their houses, their world without them knowing who he is until the bitter end. And all of the riches they acquired while he rotted in jail was disgusting. Anyway, some people did die but that's of little importance.

Dantes is also kind to all of the people that were kind to him or tried to help him while he was in jail. He's such a wonderful person. Yes, I know I keep saying that. He helps Morrel and his family when they were about to lose everything. They even lost the Pharaon but Dantes brings him a new one without Morrel even knowing where the ship came from. Dantes gave them money. He helped the family even after Morrel was gone. I cried and cried at his generosity.

And to sit and read of all the plans and all of the people crumble.

The only person to recognize Dantes, even with his disguises, was Mercedes. But she went and married freaking Fernand and had a kid. Dantes was friends with Mercedes son but things could never be good for them again. And it's so, so sad for so many involved.

Oh, and Dantes called himself "Sinbad the Sailor" and "The Count of Monte Cristo." Of course I guess if you own a rock and gold and jewels and many other things, you can call yourself anything you want! :-)

I can't sit here and go on and on about the book. It's freaking 1276 pages! I'm not that good of a reviewer to tell you something good about that many pages. Just know. . . THIS BOOK is freaking AWESOME! If you have been debating on reading it and afraid of it's size, who cares, just read it. I mean you can take two months or however long to enjoy Dantes and his adventures, but don't let the "tome" bother you. It's not boring at all! NOT ONE BIT!
