Extraordinary in its scope, quality of photos and scholarshi

This botanical work is, quite simply, a classic. The author is the world's authority on his subject, genus Conophytum. Steve Hammer is a natural-born writer and his prose is clear and concise, while also being delightfully witty and informal. For me the most attractive aspect of the book isthe many, many color photographs by John Trager. They make anyone want to grow conophytums! Some plants are photographed to show their rainbow of colors; they are delicious looking.
Yet beyond the wit and color, this is a botanical monograph and will be for many years to come the standard reference on the genus. The book is laid out logically, with chapters devoted to each series within the two sections/subgenera. The early chapters talk about the group's taxonomic history, its cultivation and so forth.
All in all, I not only recommend this book; I urge you to peruse it!

The First and the Best

For those interested in the genus Conophytum this book has to be an absolute must. Although the book is a full blown reference book Hammer's writing style is easy and there is no reason why anyone interested could not read it from cover to cover, rather than just use it a reference tool.

The photographs are superb and the plants almost leap off the page at you. The book is well produced and print and paper quality are excellent. Essential for a book that will be used on a regular basis.

It cannot be faulted and should be in the library of every enthusiast of these beautiful plants.

About the Author

Anthony King is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Exeter. He has written on sport, social theory, and the armed forces including his most recent books The Transformation of Europe's Armed Forces (Cambridge University Press 2011) and The Combat Soldier (Oxford University Press 2013). He is currently working on a book on divisional headquarters. Full disclosure... I am the author's father and to be honest discovered yet another talent that my son has developed beyond being a successful teacher, coach and athlete.
I found it well written, suspenseful (I couldn't put it down after reading 1/3 of the way through) and leaving me asking, "how long will we have to wait to see how Cathal resolves some open issues?"

This is a must read

For fans of A Game of Thrones that want an easier read, Unsung Heroes by Kyle Gurkovich is a mix of fantasy, science fiction and some historical fiction mixed within. The novel starts out with a man named Cathal on an escapade through time to save the world as we know it. With the help of a cousin and some of the Elluna Cathal searches for the five stones to save everything he and everyone else loves. His task is attempted to be thwarted at every moment by the evil gods that separated from the good Elluna long ago. Will his strength to live and save those he love be enough to stop what's coming? Alright but mostly meh...

The art in this one was alright but didn't end up being worth it. Each picture is literally just two topless girls each with one punching the other. Actually,there's one picture where steam or something covers both girls making the picture's inclusion pointless. Also,calling it "Hentai Fight Club" feels kind of misleading considering "Hentai" implies sexual content and not just topless boxing. However, if you don't want something as extreme as hentai, this one might be for you.

This book is part of a series on the same theme. Readable and enjoyable no doubt, but there is something about this series which, I suspect, addresses the unconscious more than the conscious mind. Any benefits, therefore, would tend to be relegated to that part of the psyche IMO. It is more for those who like this type of book and have come across and appreciated the author's other works.

Laura Greenstein has been an educator for over 30 years serving as a teacher, department chair, and school leader in multiple grades and subjects. Painstaking transcription, commentary a plus

Compared to other sheet music books, this one had a nice plus - the commentary by the author in front of each Zeppelin album, giving some insight as to what Bonham did, how you might think of styling the piece, etc... Not alot of words, one paragraph per song, but I found it useful.

The transcriptions show alot more notes than I remember hearing, so I went back and listened to alot of the songs and I conclude that the author really took care in being careful to get as close to possible as to what was recorded. This is the second edition, it seems, revised in 2005.

Fwiw, I am not a pro drummer by any means.

For experienced drummers only!

This is a high quality and well written book. I have a feeling the author went above and beyond to make this book as accurate as possible. One thing I will say though is that if aren't a really good drummer you may get lost in spot's. John Bonham was one of the greatest after all and his style is not easily duplicated. Meaning you should have a few years of experience in drumming before purchasing! Recommended!

Review of 'Drum Techniques of Led Zepplin'

At first glance the title is a bit confusing as this is purely a book about the work of John Bonham; regardless I was anxious to receive it. After a few early glances the only disappointment was the exclusion of 'rock n roll' yet after an initial read there was no doubt that this is a valuable resource for any drummer.
Right from the introduction the author Joe Bergamini informs and educates the reader about the man. The style of the book provides an authenticity and respect which is articulate and authoritative and sets the book up as something special. Every track has a paragraph about things to note, which adds further insight if you want to really absorb Bonzo's playing.
The transcriptions are at an advanced level which require a decent reading ability but for the diligent drummer invaluable knowledge. There are no glossy colour pics here just good honest study material, a must have instructional book that I'm fortunate to now own.
