Watered-down, too basic

This book is fairly new on the scene. If you want a basic understanding of topics, it is fine, but the book is too facile. The problems are weak and not challenging. This book would be good for a "Finance for Poets"-type of class, or perhaps a junior-college or "adult education" course, but stay away from this book if you want the topics presented in a more detailed way, or if you want more challenging problems to work. A more rigourous text is Ross, Westerfield and Jordan, "Fundamentals of Corporate Finance" (same title, but a much better book then Berk, et al.).

It does deliver the core concepts

I used this book as in a finance course. It does cover basic concepts that would allow you to branch off into specific courses. I gave it a three star review primarily because it wasn't compatible with the testing standards. It's primarily a text based approach with basic coverage on the mathematic aspects of finance.

I ended up using additional resources to suppliment the math approach. The formulas looked familiar from math courses. it took some digging around to realize that it's primarily advanced algebra, the topic of series and sequence but in an applied approach. It's a good book if you just want exposure into aspects of finance, but don't think it'll make you an expert.

The pro's consist of the authors identifying theory, the development of various methods, and giving a lot of concise examples for the concepts using real firms. For the most part, you can view the formulas as math for non math majors. There were some problems where there was no way around dealing with the more complex formulas. If the online content and testing had been consistent with the text teaching style, I would have given this book a better rating.

To maximize your learning experience, I recomend reviewing macroeconomics, I took this concurrently with macroeconomics. The econ course explain the economics aspect a lot clearer and simpler than this text book. I also reviewed old material for advanced algebra to help with using the formulas, series and sequence dealt with compound interest and beyond. Also there should be an understanding that statistical analysis helps derives some of the projected figures used in the capital budgeting section.

Excellent book on Faith and Forgiveness

Twist of Faith is a wonderful book on faith and forgiveness in the midst of family tragedy. The author is a personal friend of mine, and I had the joy of serving as pastor to several members of his family during the accident and their attempt to find God's peace in the midst of struggle. The author openly and honestly deals with the many struggles he and his children faced as they sought to "pick up the pieces" after his wife's death. This book will touch the hearts of all who read it: those who are in the midst of tragedy, those seeking to forgive and be forgiven, and those who want to be present with loved ones who are hurting. A great book written by a faithful servant of God.

Remarkable Story of Inspiration- A journey through tragedy and Faith

I read Ridley's book well over a year ago and intended to write a review then.
Since reading this, I've gotten to know Ridley and Lisa much better. This account of the Barron's journey is something everyone should read. I have shared this book with many people in the last year.
If you have suffered a loss of any kind, Ridley's journey will provide a glimpse of what God can do through any events.
Through this book, you will see how God can bring two families that have experienced trials together and minister to multitudes of others.

Read In one sitting

I absolutely could not put this book down. I believe that our response to things that happen in our lives is largely based upon our attitude, which is determined by our faith and how we choose to see things. Mr. Barron chose to see the aftermath of his personal tragedy through the eyes of his faith. He wanted to see something positive come from the tragedy so he looked for the positive in every opportunity that arose after the accident. His choice to forgive and walkway from bitterness has allowed him to find peace and even happiness. The path was not easy for him which makes this story even more meaningful.

A Compelling Story Plot

I read this novel in one evening. Yes, the way the dialog flows made the story compelling and made me have to see what happened next. I truly enjoyed the reading experience this book gave me.

We have the main character, whom I fell in love with almost immediately, Pippi O'Brien. Pippi is a former stock trader (Chicago floor,) and now is working hard at being a 'Resale Merchandiser.' Which means she dumpster dives and resells what she finds. Of course, she also goes to yard sales and other venues to find her 'deals.' Pippi isn't rich, however, she is happier than when she was in the 'industry.'

Pippi was busy looking through garbage (legal) at the curbside of an affluent home, when she happens upon a suspicious article of clothing...this is when we learn that Pippi has an over active imagination or is it? Well, when her boyfriend, police detective, Sean Panelli, is called out on a homicide at the very home Pippi had been at...she 'figures out' the first murder scenario in a rollicking fast-paced adventure to find the killer. As the scenarios change, alter, and deepen, Pippi takes us readers on a humorous trip. Can she be correct? Or, is Pippi in danger, after someone plants evidence in her apartment.

This novel was a surprise to me. Especially for a debut novel. Ms. Furlong-Bolliger is a talented author and I certainly look forward to future tales by her.

A Fast-Paced, Humorous Whodunit

I thoroughly enjoyed reading MURDER FOR BID. The plot moves quickly, with many unexpected twists. The protagonist, Pippi O'Brien, is often impetuous but always resourceful, determined, and likable. The other colorful characters in the novel add interest and conflict. There's real emotional depth to this novel, too--some of Pippi's relationships are quite touching. But the humor keeps the tone light and always enjoyable. By the end of the novel, the mystery is solved, but some personal issues aren't yet settled. Maybe they will be in a sequel!

Great Book

This book is an easy read not just because of the twelve point type but by the way the plot flows from page to page. It is easy to identify with the down-to-earth characters. I thought I had the mystery solved halfway through the book but found I was completely wrong when I reached the end. The author keeps you guessing from chapter to chapter so this book is hard to put down as you want to reach the end so you will know how Pippi, the main character, solves the mystery.

Hoping there will be a sequel to this book so I can follow additional adventures of Pippi O'Brien.

All's Well That Ends Well?

If Chambers' previous novel is based on Twelfth Night (The Lady's Secret, worth a read), this one is definitely based on All's Well That Ends Well. Chambers has a creative take on the story, but unfortunately retains all of the annoyingness of Shakespeare's original play.

Another reviewer commented that this book is an angst fest. It is, but it's a rather well done angst fest. The situation the two main characters find themselves in (a badly arranged marriage of necessity) is genuinely very awkward and painful, and the choices they make in dealing with the situation are very understandable. However, as a romance the book falls a bit flat.

There is so much focus on everything dividing them, I think the author forgot to actually build the relationship. She falls in love with him in the first ten pages after seeing him once; he falls in love with her five years later, seemingly randomly--or perhaps just because she is now pretty? It's sort of unclear, and the heroine herself doesn't seem to know if she should be offended that he only likes her now that she's pretty.

The heroine seems to spend a lot of time apologizing--somewhat understandably, since in that era her life literally depends on her husband's forbearance--and the hero spends a lot of time being unnecessarly resentful/outraged towards his wife while never acknowledging that he himself behaved very badly. When he does finally admit that he was in the wrong as well and shares responsibility for their marital issues it's underwhelming--a couple of boo-hoos and one apology, and suddenly everything is fine? After five years of marital cold war? I found it unconvincing.

These issues aside, it was actually a fairly interesting read, and is an original, well-written re-casting of one of Shakespeare's works. Unfortunately I never really liked All's Well That Ends Well, and Chambers never quite managed to redeem that difficult premise.

Angst, angst, and more sadness

Angst, angst, and more angst. The main characters spend the entire book fighting and being angry at each other.

There were very few tender moments and tiny bits of humor. It was just 2 people fighting most of the book.

Then the author does something so sad and so heartbreaking, I cried. It was terrible and it had no place in a romance novel.

This book did not leave me with a happy feeling. It left me with "I can't believe I wasted time reading this" feeling.

Unless you like drama and fighting in your historical romances, do not read this book.

Loved Rose - hated Gil! (Spoilers ahead)

Gil is forced into a marriage with Rose due to his father's gambling habits, even though his heart belongs to another. Instead of treating Rose with kindness (its not like the reason they got married was her fault), he beds her, treats her appallingly the second night and then runs away to London. There, he stays away for five years, sleeping with multiple women, living the carefree life of a bachelor and has his lawyer correspond with his wife because he…can't be bothered, I guess.
Then Rose comes to London, they meet but Gil doesn't recognise her and they have an affair. She ends up pregnant, she writes to him as his wife, telling him she is expecting a baby, and when he goes to see her, he finds out she is in fact the woman he had a brief affair with in London.
What I found ridiculous was he was angry at her for her deception, making comments about whether the baby was in fact his, when he'd been whoring around London. But that's okay, he's a man and he can do no wrong, right?
Then when the tragedy happens, he of course isn't around. He allows her to be humiliated, knowing his mistresses have turned up to see her, and yet doesn't really do anything about it. He was such a weak, pathetic character that I cared very little for him. Yes he felt bad for the way he treated her, but all we got was his guilty thoughts. If he'd just told her, apologised in person…well, I suppose we wouldn't really have a story. And that's okay. But what wasn't okay was she was expected to forget his past, forget he had many mistresses, forget the way he treated her, but he could hold onto his grudge about how he was forced to marry her, making her feel like it was her fault.
I do believe if Rose's father hadn't gone to see him at the end of the book, he wouldn't have gone to see her at all. I think he would have gone back to his former ways, forgetting about his wife, telling himself it was for the best to assuage his guilt.
The reason it gets 3 stars and not a lesser rating was because I loved Rose. She was smart, a hard worker, independent, genuine, caring….way too good for Gil and his peers. And I felt for her, for everything she went through. Her character was written beautifully and she was a fantastic heroine. But I was disappointed when at the end, all Gil had to say was he's really sorry (that took a small paragraph) and an 'I love you' and all is instantly forgiven. Felt like a slap in the face, a bit of a cop out, just to give them a HEA. If the ending hadn't been so rushed, and the author had taken time for Gil to be a little more redeemable, it could have been a great story.
