Best Access book I have ever read

This is one of the most intelligent books I have ever read on understanding Access... As well as one of the clearest computer books I have ever read. And as software trainer, I have stopped reading quite a few. This book should be on the business bookshelf every public library because its a clear primer on Access and data analysis. I was hooked on the author's clear sense of purpose and desire to communicate within the first few pages. I bought the book on the spot in Barnes & Noble, even though I knew I could get it cheaper here. I sent additional copies from here as gifts to friends who I knew had long struggled with Access. I should clarify, this book is not about Microsoft Access, but about using Access as a tool to create meaningful analysis of your business data. The author's breakdown of business intelligence is worth the price of the book alone. I have not given many books a 5 star rating, but I give it here without reservation.

Be careful for a books with all reviews in "5 stars"

This book, Data Analysis with Microsoft Access 2010: From Simple Queries to Business Intelligence, provides a good description of user interface functionality available in Access 2010 with some discussions of business intelligence and data warehouse. The description/discussion is basic, the approach is simple, and the level is introductory.

Unfortunately, the book author did not provide any sample file for the examples discussed either for download or in an attached CD for most chapters until Chapter 15. (This book has 16 chapters and two appendices.) One value of having a book is organized information and this book does provide that, though at the very elementary level. This book provides quite a few simple queries as examples. They can serve as an introduction to get foot wet. Access Help does the same. To learn Access 2010 user interface as provided in this book, a user can press F1 key to search the help file and read the relevant information when using Access 2010.

This book is not for a reader who is serious in acquiring knowledge in Data Analysis and/or Business Intelligence.

In all, there are two small files available for download from [...]. These two files are "SalesDatabase.zip" and "DataWarehouse.zip."

The first zip file is a single table database (SalesDatabase.accdb) with a few additional files:
1. 1 table: GeographicSales (9 records and 3 fields)
2. 2 queries: SalesByState and UniqueRegions
3. 2 forms: MainMenu and SalesByState
4. 1 report: Sales By State
5. 1 macro: Instructions
After unzip, the size of this database is 520 KB.

This file is used as an example for Forms, Macros, and Reports. This book devoted 11 pages to discuss this file in its Appendix A.

The data warehouse database has
1. 16 tables and
2. 10 queries (2 for Append, 5 for Make Table, and 3 for report/analysis).

Chapter 15, The Data Warehouse, uses this database as its main example. This book also devoted 3 pages in its Appendix B to discuss this database, which briefly describes the process of how this database can be built. This database has 904 KB and is a vanilla database, e.g., just a collection of tables and queries, and no relationship between tables is defined.

I am not convinced that "this is the only book you'll need to gain a working knowledge of Access, and how it can be used for data analysis." This claim is misleading.

Informative & Easy to Follow

I picked up this book because I needed to buff up my MS Access skills for a job as a data collector. I've used Access in the past to do very simple data entry but this new position requried me to create, store, maintain and edit tables within Access. This book very clearly teaches you how to run the processes in easy to read step instructions.

It isn't very dry like others and makes for a great, informative read.

Excellent introductory FE programming text !

Of the several FE programming texts in the market, I found this book to be the most simple and easy to understand. The authors have a clear writing style that makes the book very easy to understand. The programs are in Fortran, but that is not a great obstacle. The book "Finite elements in plasticity: Theory and practice" by the same authors shows how nonlinear programs should be coded. I would be more than willing to buy both books if they are available somewhere.

Inspiring. But I have no idea what to do now.

This was the book that introduced me to permacuture. I had never even heard the term before, but stumbled upon it when I found this book at a local Barnes &Noble. The first third or so of the book introduces permaculture principles and the philosophy behind it. That alone is incredibly inspiring and maybe want to read more deeply. Unfortunately, I finished reading the book with little idea about how to begin. There are some areas that are somewhat helpful (e.g., section that explains an ideal permaculture garden), and it has some practical suggestions some suggestions, but I would really like to see a worksheet, or a how-to guide, or a bunch of case studies.

So, five stars for being inspiring, but 4 stars for practicality.

Love Celie and Castle Glower!

This is by the same author as Dragon Slippers/Flight/Spear but aimed at a slightly younger audience.

Celie is 11-years-old and the youngest princess in Castle Glower. And everybody knows the Castle loves her best. When the Castle is bored, which it usually is on Tuesdays since that is the day King Glower the 79th hears petitions, it opens up a new set of rooms. And one of Celie's favorite habits is to explore the Castle, mapping out the new rooms and finding it's secret passageways.

When Celie's eldest brother graduates from Wizard College, the king and queen leave Castle Glower to attend his graduation. When their carriage is attacked by bandits on the way back, everyone believes the worst but Celie, Rolf (the crown prince) and Lilah (Celie's very proper older sister) know they can't have been killed since the Castle hasn't changed anything about the king and queen's rooms. When foreign dignitaries arrive to "mourn" the passing of the king and queen, the royal children know that at least one of them is eyeing their kingdom in the hopes of taking over. The interlopers thought it'd be easy; what they failed to take into account was Castle Glower itself which helps the three royal children "play pranks" on those that would take what doesn't belong to them.

Some of the pranks are delightfully mischievous and would definitely appeal to the pre-teen reader. And some of Celie's escapades are quite daring. It has a very good pace to the plot and was never boring, even to me, and I am way outside the targeted audience range.

Anyday at the Castle is a good day

When tragedy strikes the royal family of Sleyne, Princess Celie works with her brother and sister to protect their home and save their kingdom. Celie may only be 11, but she's got the castle on her side with its ever changing floor plan, shrinking rooms, hidden passageways and more.

I absolutely loved this story. It was perfectly paced as it moved from introduction to political intrigue to danger and more. The story was both fun and serious. I couldn't put the book down because I had to know what happened next.

I loved the Castle. The kingdom knows that it is really the Castle who rules the land by deciding who is fit and who isn't. Those the Castle deems unworthy find their rooms shrinking and moving farther and farther away from the Throne Room, not to mention other mischief. Those the Castle favors find their rooms comfortable and convenient to find.

Princess Celie may be young, but she was a great character and easy to love and understand. Even though I'm in my 30's, I enjoyed reading about this young girl and her adventures. I laughed over the plots Celie and her siblings put into action and smiled over the way they cared for each other.

TUESDAYS AT THE CASTLE was a fast and easy read. The chapters are rather short making it easy to read just one a night with your child. This was such a fun story that I can't wait to read it again only this time with my kids.

Fun Fantasy Romp Through a Magical Castle

`Tuesdays at the Castle' is the start of a new series from popular author Jessica Day George. Styled in the classic fantasy setting of knights, kings, princesses, evil councilors and magic castles; George adds a fun twist by giving the Castle Glower the unique power of change, and feelings. Eleven year old Princess Celie has a special relationship with the castle, and documents it's Tuesday architectural changes in her atlas. This becomes a key benefit when later her parents and older brother are attacked outside of the castle, and Celie and her brother Rolf and sister Lilah must navigate the treacherous duplicity of the King's councilors as they try and install the evil Prince Khelsh to the throne.

Descriptive, fast paced, with fun light-hearted characters, this is a great start to tale that has much more to give. Surprisingly advertised as a middle-grade novel, it really is an excellent read aloud for elementary school students, with it's vivid language, and detailed descriptions. The action never gets too scary or dark, so younger readers can definitely enjoy the magical transformations of Castle Glower, and the Glower children's bravery as they defend their home and realm .

A Dubious Disciple Book Review

Ouch. Several months ago, Harper One sent me a short collection of Rob Bell reprints to review. I slowly worked my way through them, enjoying each one, and somehow left this one sitting on the shelves. Too many other obligations. I just now picked it up, and read it in one sitting.

I couldn't put it down. Forget Velvet Elvis. Forget Love Wins. This 180-page sermon, this little obscure work, is for Bible groupies Bell's real masterpiece. It's definitely my new favorite, so maybe that says something about co-author Don Golden, a name I hadn't come across before.

From the Exodus, to the Temple construction, to the Eucharist, Bell and Golden reveal a surprising thread that weaves its way throughout the Bible. This "new perspective " opens up what the Bible means to Americans today, living in the world's most powerful nation, boasting the greatest military, yet holding the strongest responsibility for the world's impoverished. America is an empire, and the Bible has a lot to say about empires.

"I hope you see that there is a common humanity we share with everybody alive today, and everybody who has come before us," writes Bell in the preface. This little book accomplishes just that.

Rob Bell's book and all his work has restored not only my faith and hope but returned me to something I thought was lost.

I've read this book front to back and I am looking for a way to contact the author. I've run the weight loss gamut. I'm a chef by trade. I know good nutrition. I've tried to incorporate good activity into my routine, along with good nutrition.

But I feel like, what's missing, is a dominant, assertive force that can guide me through this process. If the author of this ebook, or anyone else who can fit these shoes is interested, I have photo/video I am willing to share and update daily, and conform to a routine.

This book gives couples the guidelines to do just that: incorporate a healthy daily routine with that of their "off color " desires.

Very Good reading

This author does well at detailing different encounters, be it alien, supernatural or just pure strange encounters. Some of these encounters were seen by top military and top science officials as well as the general public. I have to admit I did have trouble putting this book down I found it that interesting.

A fascinating subject to take you away from the everyday mundane realities. I do not necessarily believe in each story but it does make me pause and think about it.

Phantoms and Mosters is spine tingling!

Lon Strickler’s “Phantoms and Monsters: Strange Encounters” is vast an eerie collection of first and second-hand eyewitness accounts from many around the country, detailing sightings and interactions with everything from aliens, ghosts, skinwalkers, hairy bipeds, and the unexplainable. Many of the accounts will raise the hair on your head, some will leave you questioning and skeptical, but either way, Stricker had comprised a book that will have you thrilled and wide-eyed while turning the pages.

Many reported phenomena are validated through other eyewitness accounts reporting the same sightings or occurrences in both nearby and distant locations. Many report sightings of reptilian-type aliens, alien-abductions, and odd neighbors that suddenly vanished. One of the most notable accounts dealing with abductions comes from a man who received a strange phone call at his office, telling him that his parents had disappeared, but that they were okay. The man immediately left to search for his parents at their home, only to find that it was true, they were gone. The man received another phone call telling him that one day his parents would return. To this day, they remain missing.

Strickler has chosen to leave the written accounts that were sent to him (many by email) in an unedited format. It often leaves the reader unable to recognize if many of the typographical mistakes have been made by the claimant or the copy editor. Yet, it doesn’t impede upon the book’s spine-tingling grip and fascinating content. It also adds or detracts credibility from the individual accounts, though this may be the author’s intention. Strickler leaves us with the option of assessing each account for ourselves, and to arrive at our own conclusions.

The book is five-star for its captivating quality and well comprised information. I’m anxious to read the second installment, “Phantoms and Monsters: Cryptid Encounters.”

This is a fascinating read. Its basically written to the author in the witnesses own words,usually asking for answers or if he knows what it is. If even half of these stories are true,we share a world with ghosts,demons,humanoid animal creatures and
aliens. Regardless whether you believe them or not,this book gets your imagination flowing and thinking about the possibility of what if it is true. How these people must have felt quite helpless at the time not knowing what to do,who to tell or how to get help. This author has a website and people

Profound truths in understandable, acceptable language

This is the first of Richard Dotts book which took me three readings to finish. (I'm beginning the fourth).

A five star review means that I love this book
** I'm reviewing only the quality of the book. Careful not to reveal content.

This Book again deals on Manifestation methodology from a subtler perspective.

As a student of Thich Nhat Hanh, I can immediately connect to the subject what the author talks about and can tell that this book is

- Supremely smooth compared to the earlier ones

- Conveys the matter in smaller packets

- Each of the idea which is communicated makes us understand - become confident - move ahead

- Focused on making the reader empowered, balanced and progressive

From the energy exercises, I can tell that the author has PRACTICED and then is now PREACHING.

Though my experiences are much softer than Dotts, I'm very sure, the guiding to a reader through this book is of high quality and uncompromising.

These books by Richard Dotts definitely have an advantage of educating the reader.

Amazing!

When I read my first Richard Dotts book I was in such a state of depression that I couldn't imagine feeling good... I didn't think I had the focus, energy or depth to actually manifest things and events in my life. Now, I believe I say this about every new book he puts out, but this is one of the best books out there.
