The Raj as family history

The author has chosen to recount the coming about of the British Raj using the lens of family history. It is an interesting approach, for it gives depth to historical events we would otherwise skim over. Nothing is better than human color and detail for getting a handle on many angles of the period. The interest seldom flags, and one is drawn along with the narrative flowing as a majestic river.

The book is at its best when it retells the relentless march of British greed, gobbling up everything in its path. The author is clear-headed about it. Some of the rulers were petty despots, profligate, effete, and often plain dumb. Nevertheless, the way they were brings no credit to the perpetrators. There is no indication that British rule made much difference to the peasants in the fields. On the contrary: the old system, meretricious as it was, allowed for ambiguities and accommodation. It was elastic. British rule may have been just, but it was unduly harsh, unbending, and blind to the realities on the ground. It does not surprise that most famines in India took place during the period of British paramountcy.

The chosen approach has drawbacks, however. Where the family record is silent, the author either remains mute or needs to interpolate from sometimes a skewed angle. The “Mutiny” here is not presented here in full: there are aspects of it that are highlighted, others are ignored – it is all a bit haphazard. It is also regrettable that the heroes of the book lost their personal voice as the tragedy unfolded. Though they were present, and wrote policy papers, we do not know what they privately thought of it.

Chapter XVIII is an attempt to see the “Mutiny” in historical perspective. This is the highlight of the book, and well worth studying. The view is balanced, and the case the author makes is plausible, nay convincing. India as a whole, not just sepoys, rebelled against British overbearance. It was a war of independencebthe Indians lost. The only aspect one misses is the increasing and interconnected role of missionaries and spouses from the UKv at the time of the events. Their attempt rashly to acculturate India to British imperial standards contributed much to the rebellion.

Truly an eye-opening book

I've never given much due to investing in assets such as gold or art. I thought gold had no place in a true investor's portfolio and art was "investing" in one's image and reputation, but not in long-term wealth. This book posits a very good theory why I'm wrong now, and in the future. The author comes from a very strong background, and I only found this book after Dylan Grice recommended it.

Any true investor with an ability to extend their investments beyond prototypical mutual funds or etfs will benefit from reading this book. Even if one doesn't go out and immediately buy some silver or start collecting wine, the reasoning and data behind why that is a good idea is worth the price of the book alone.

Excellent primer on market dynamics

Loved this book. Links complex economic factors to the quickly changing market demand for silver, wine, art and gold. It explains why these are crucial investments due to structural issues in our 'new normal' economy. It's easy to digest and a quick read, but Roseman's and Bacon's data often makes you stop to consider their implications. About the Author

Andrew J. DuBrin is Professor Emeritus at the College of Business, Rochester Institute of Technology where he has taught organizational behavior, leadership and career management. His research interests include human relations and business psychology. His research has been reported in Entrepreneur, Psychology Today, the Wall Street Journal, Fortune Small Biz, and over 100 national magazines and local newspapers.

 

Terri Geerinck is a faculty member in the Interdisciplinary Studies Centre at Sir Sandford Fleming College. She teaches several courses including Introductory Psychology, Social Psychology, and Interpersonal and Group Dynamics. As part of a team, she has also delivered human relations training to business and industry with a particular emphasis on problem solving, interpersonal communication skills, and conflict management. Her teaching interests are instructional design, methodology, prior learning assessment, and course conversion to web-based formats. Before teaching at Sir Sandford Fleming, she held various consulting positions in several communities in Ontario. Terri Geerinck's formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and sociology from Brock University and a master's degree in education from Central Michigan University.

Watered-down, too basic

This book is fairly new on the scene. If you want a basic understanding of topics, it is fine, but the book is too facile. The problems are weak and not challenging. This book would be good for a "Finance for Poets"-type of class, or perhaps a junior-college or "adult education" course, but stay away from this book if you want the topics presented in a more detailed way, or if you want more challenging problems to work. A more rigourous text is Ross, Westerfield and Jordan, "Fundamentals of Corporate Finance" (same title, but a much better book then Berk, et al.).

It does deliver the core concepts

I used this book as in a finance course. It does cover basic concepts that would allow you to branch off into specific courses. I gave it a three star review primarily because it wasn't compatible with the testing standards. It's primarily a text based approach with basic coverage on the mathematic aspects of finance.

I ended up using additional resources to suppliment the math approach. The formulas looked familiar from math courses. it took some digging around to realize that it's primarily advanced algebra, the topic of series and sequence but in an applied approach. It's a good book if you just want exposure into aspects of finance, but don't think it'll make you an expert.

The pro's consist of the authors identifying theory, the development of various methods, and giving a lot of concise examples for the concepts using real firms. For the most part, you can view the formulas as math for non math majors. There were some problems where there was no way around dealing with the more complex formulas. If the online content and testing had been consistent with the text teaching style, I would have given this book a better rating.

To maximize your learning experience, I recomend reviewing macroeconomics, I took this concurrently with macroeconomics. The econ course explain the economics aspect a lot clearer and simpler than this text book. I also reviewed old material for advanced algebra to help with using the formulas, series and sequence dealt with compound interest and beyond. Also there should be an understanding that statistical analysis helps derives some of the projected figures used in the capital budgeting section.

Excellent book on Faith and Forgiveness

Twist of Faith is a wonderful book on faith and forgiveness in the midst of family tragedy. The author is a personal friend of mine, and I had the joy of serving as pastor to several members of his family during the accident and their attempt to find God's peace in the midst of struggle. The author openly and honestly deals with the many struggles he and his children faced as they sought to "pick up the pieces" after his wife's death. This book will touch the hearts of all who read it: those who are in the midst of tragedy, those seeking to forgive and be forgiven, and those who want to be present with loved ones who are hurting. A great book written by a faithful servant of God.

Remarkable Story of Inspiration- A journey through tragedy and Faith

I read Ridley's book well over a year ago and intended to write a review then.
Since reading this, I've gotten to know Ridley and Lisa much better. This account of the Barron's journey is something everyone should read. I have shared this book with many people in the last year.
If you have suffered a loss of any kind, Ridley's journey will provide a glimpse of what God can do through any events.
Through this book, you will see how God can bring two families that have experienced trials together and minister to multitudes of others.
Read the book, then do what you can to bring Ridley ad Lisa Barron to your community. I promise, you will be blessed!

Read In one sitting

I absolutely could not put this book down. I believe that our response to things that happen in our lives is largely based upon our attitude, which is determined by our faith and how we choose to see things. Mr. Barron chose to see the aftermath of his personal tragedy through the eyes of his faith. He wanted to see something positive come from the tragedy so he looked for the positive in every opportunity that arose after the accident. His choice to forgive and walkway from bitterness has allowed him to find peace and even happiness. The path was not easy for him which makes this story even more meaningful.
