The author's humble anecdotes entertain and warn one of the construction mistakes he has made. The chapters walk the reader step-by-step through every phase of guitar construction, from the choice of wood to the finished guitar. "Classic Guitar Making" is a wonderful book by a wonderful teacher.

My Grandfather

I am the Grandson of Arthur E. Overholtzer, my mother is Shirley, the youngest of Art's kids. I have his last completed guitar, #16, finished in 1973. All my Aunts have one of his masterpieces, and even the Grandchampion, #9. My Grandfather was a woodworker all his life, and most of his family is still into woodworking or some sort of construction around Modesto, CA. There are many people that love my Grandfathers book for how in depth it goes to explain just how and why you need to 'do this'. In his life, he built violins and a base guitar, and always wanted the absolute best sound from all of them.

Through a Different Lens

This book is a good start if you wish to learn about Spinoza. The fact that it is written by a renowned philosopher certainly adds to its charm. The book is part of a series by the author about individuals he considers to be the great philosophers. His choices are generally good ones.

Jaspers tells you most of what you need to know about Spinoza in a sophisticated but easily comprehensible manner. The only problem with the book is that it is now somewhat old and does not take into account recent work on the subject. There has been a great amount of recent scholarship concerning Spinoza's life and philosophy. In addition, there have been several high-level popular treatments. Steven Nadler and Steven B. Smith have written works which have significantly broadened the field.

The foregoing should not discourage readers from looking into this book. It is a good and useful one, especially if Spinoza is not the reader's principal interest. Nevertheless, if the reader is primarily interested in Spinoza and in the most up-to-date scholarship, he or she should look elsewhere.

The best book about Spinoza I have encountered

I have read a dozen books or so about Spinoza's philosophy over the last 15 years. This is easily the most interesting.

It is as if one great mind (Jaspers) read the works of another great mind (Spinoza) and lets you listen in as he thinks about what he has read. Among other things, Jaspers explains that Spinoza is one of the few human beings who managed to think his way to a vision of God that lies beyond all words, all concepts, all symbols, all liturgy, all sacred books - beyond everything that most of us require to humanize God so that we can even begin to see - and then once there had the spiritual strength to never look away.

Jaspers articulated for me precisely why I had hitherto suspected that Spinoza is one of the most important Western philosophers. For that I am very grateful.

Mystery Novel about Washington Intelligence

This 1974 novel used sources like "The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia" by Alfred W. McCoy, and the others listed in the 'Preface'. It takes place in Washington DC. Ronald Malcolm works for the "American Literary Historical Society", and reads detective and mystery novels to summarize its plots for his employer. One day their new accountant tells Malcolm there is a discrepancy in the records; of seven crates shipped from Seattle only five crates arrived in Washington. This had not been noticed previously. The accountant reports this loss in a memo.

Malcolm reports to work on Thursday. It is his turn to go out for sandwiches for lunch, and he uses a basement exit for a short-cut. He also runs an errand. He returns to find the front door locked; he has to use his key. Then he finds that all of his co-workers have been killed by professional assassins. Malcolm leaves the building and calls the "panic number" from a public phone to report the maximum damage; he is told to disappear and call back later. When Malcolm calls back, he is told to make contact in an alley of a Georgetown theater. But his rescue team takes a shot at Malcolm, who fires back, escapes, and goes to ground. Will Malcolm be rescued by he CIA or found by the killers? And who is the double agent?

After you read this novel you can better understand the film, which is a simplified and condensed version (called "Three Days ...). The story was changed from drug smuggling (to censor drug references?), and relocated to NY city. This story seems implausible to me, since eliminating the one link in Seattle would avoid the furious investigation that would follow a massacre of seven in Washington DC.

Condor is the code name for an employee of the CIA. His mission is to read, read everything he can to see if there are any subversive codes being posted in innocuous looking literature.
The new accountant discovers that the number of packages shipped to his location do not match the bill of lading and tells Condor hoping to get his view on if he should tell the boss. The accountant bypasses his immediate boss and brings this to the attention of his superiors in Langley.
One day Condor leaves the building for lunch by an un-recorded unauthorized back door. On returning he finds everyone dead.
Who did this and who can he trust? To survive he must use his wits and what he has learned from his reading.
A movie "Three days of the Condor" is based on this book, which is really first in a series of books, sort of like the James Bond series. Naturally being film media the story needed cutting down to size, hence three days instead of six. Robert Redford has to squeeze James Grady's "Six Days of the Condor" into the Redford mold. The book plot of drugs and Viet Nam are out. Redford's substitute plot of oil and Arabs is in. Bad guys differ. Great acting, great actors and a few faux pas, such as if they knew there was a back door to the location, don't you think it would be watched? In the movie, Tina Chen (Janice) can be seen again in "Paper Man" (1971).
Reading a later introduction in the book by James Grady the plot was changed because of the politics of the day at the time of the film Viet Nam was out and oil was in. Also the drug-of-choice in the book was change.

Three Days Not Long Enough

Condor reads spy novels for a living, picking out the neat twists and checking that no spooks have spilled the beans on sensitive government information. He doesn't seem too bothered by the fact that he works for the CIA, until he gets back from buying lunch one day and finds everybody dead.
From that moment things get hectic, first he is hunted and then he becomes the hunter as he figures out how to use his skills and knowledge against a shadowy coalition of G men and assassins, and tries to discover why they want him dead. The story rattles along and drags you with it, and whilst the movie is better paced, the book is still well worth the trip.

About the Author
Khushwant Singh was born in 1915, in the Hadali village of Punjab, which is now a part of Pakistan. He is a widely read and well-known columnist and author in India. He was the editor of The Illustrated Weekly of India, The Hindustan Times and National Herald and the founder-editor of Yogana. The Mark of Vishnu and Other Stories was his first book, which was published in 1950. Over the past six decades he has published several best-selling nonfiction and fiction books.

Fantastic book!

I bought this book looking at as a way to craft with my kids, when they got older. (Ages 5, 3 and 1) But what we actually got was a book of creative ways to connect with my kids. I hadn't been able to articulate what I felt was missing in our daily family life, I realized after skimming this book that some of what was missing was family rituals. The first week we had the book we made a basket of cloth napkins to use at dinner every night. My kids loved helping pick out fabric, and they love setting the table. Even little kids have ways of helping with these projects. My mom made the arm chair pocket for my house, I have NO IDEA how I have lived this long without it! We can't wait to do more projects, and make stuff together! Oh, and the pictures and explanations are wonderful!

You SO want to buy this book.

You know those books that seem appealing late at night on Amazon but then completely fail to deliver once delivered to your door a week later? Thank the gods this is NOT one of those books. Every single project appeals. And will actually make you ravenous for some craft time, stat. Combine this with upcycling goodness AND family/community connection goodness, beautiful photos, humor, amazing style, and great writing.... you want this on your shelf. It's one of the best books of this sort that I've seen (and I have read them all).

This will be your go-to book for family crafting.

What a sweet and gorgeous book. First, it's FULL of amazing projects for all levels of craftiness. Most of the project materials are upcycled, which makes them infinitely affordable. The instructions are so clearly written that even absolute beginners will be able to complete them with satisfying results. And, unlike other "crafting with kids" books, you and your family will actually WANT to make the things in the book. The ideas are inspiring and you'll find yourself coming up with all sorts of ways to put your own spin on them.

Second, the ideas and suggestions for creating time and space to craft as a family are genius. This book acknowledges that it can be difficult, at best, to craft with kids. It talks you through it and helps make the whole experience satisfying, even if a project needs to be completed over several days instead of all at once. The authors help you slow down, breathe, and embrace the process. It's not just about making stuff, it's about improving family time. You'll want to read every word of this book.
