An Alternate Reality Sequel That Is Starting To Move Away From The Brilliant Premise That Hooked Me
By K. Harris
One of my favorite books of 2011 was "The Demi-Monde: Winter." Author Rod Rees took a supremely cool premise and ran with it, creating one of the most memorable action/adventure epics that I've experienced in quite some time. While not a perfect novel by any means--some of the characterizations are rather thinly drawn and I don't dare to dig too deeply into the scientific and technological aspects of the story--I can say that, for me, what I got was more than enough to compensate for any perceived shortcomings. Simply put, I loved the book. It had a relentless pace, an ingenious setting, and an intriguing historical element--all of which appealed to me immensely. When I saw that Rees had already released the second volume "Spring" in the United Kingdom, I purchased it immediately. That was how excited I was to continue the story! This is the second (called The Shadow Wars here) in a presumed four part series and, truthfully, it fell a little short of the first volume's cleverness. It is still an enjoyably dark tale, but the historical elements that distinguish "Winter" so brilliantly take a back seat in this continuation.

The concept at the heart of "The Demi-Monde" series is easily its most salient selling point. The Demi-Monde is an artificially constructed, fully immersive simulation model used to train soldiers for impending combat missions. The virtual environment has been stacked to make it extremely volatile and unpredictable with a global climate of racial, cultural, and sexist inequality and hatred. To further complicate matters, the world is filled with accurate replications of some very evil, unscrupulous, and/or notorious historical figures. From the bloody reign of the Third Reich to appearances by or mention of notables representing Robespierre, Borgia, Shaka Zulu, Marx, Trotsky, and Empress Wu among numerous other personages--the books provide a fascinating alternate reality that I simply loved. In the opener, the main plot point revolves around the president's daughter who gets trapped in this make believe, but very real, dimension. A daring rescue is plotted and an ordinary young woman must enter the Demi-Monde to navigate its dangers and find the missing girl.

"Spring" picks up moments after the prior volume ends. It follows the same basic cast of characters (with a few notable names getting short shrift) in another geographic setting, mainly Paris and Venice. The main action set piece of the first book played out in the Warsaw Ghetto as German troops move to annihilate the trapped community. The fantastical blend of factual elements with over-the-top fiction really worked and the real aspects of history provided an unexpected gravitas to an atypical adventure tale. Rees downplays this in "Spring" with little adherence to a realistic alternate timeline. He simply creates a new world where our characters interact principally with figures like de Sade, Nostradamus, Torquemada, and Doge Catherine-Sophia. Additional time is spent in the real world where another nefarious plot in underway. And inexplicably, Rees has also upped the supernatural quotient as well. In the end, it all starts to feel a bit over-stuffed.

In short, I didn't fall head over heels in love with "Spring" as I hoped to. It is still fun, but it is getting increasingly chaotic in its everything-but-the-kitchen-sink plotting. As it moves further away from its historical parallels into the supernatural realm, the series seems to losing a grasp on what made it so unique in the first place. I'll still check out "Fall," but I'm not certain that the story can get back on track. It might continue to be fun, but I wanted it to be epic. KGHarris, 2/12.

"Intense" does not begin to describe it!
By Tiffany A. Harkleroad
Dystopian life in the Demi-Monde continues, and it continues to degenerate. Norma Williams is stuck in the Demi-Monde as Aaliz Heydrich replaces her in the real world. Ella Thomas has slowly become the Messiah, and as her power grows, her baser nature takes over, turning her into a completely different being. Norma helps lead a resistance movement against Ella. And it slowly becomes apparent that the Demi-Monde is something much more than just computer simulation.

The action of the first book is ratcheted up a few notches in the second book of the Demi-Monde saga. So if book one was explosive, this book is Michael Bay-splosive. Seriously, the word intense does not even begin to cover it. The Demi-Monde continues to devolve into the very worst aspects of humanity. I found every minute fascinating.

While I have always been interested in history, I have never actually been a scholar of the subject, so a good many of the real historical characters and concepts are slightly lost on me, which is a real shame; as much admiration as I have for these books, I bet I would have much more if I knew all the references. However, the writing is incredibly clever and engaging. I love the many plays on words and the reimagining of many historical figures.

The book is full of action, history, and psychological thrills, so it will appeal to fans of many genres. Throw in some dystopia and paranormal aspects, and you have appealed to a wide variety of readers. Personally, I cannot wait to see where this series goes next.

well written cliffhanger
By Majestic Mustache
I recently found "The Demi-Monde: Winter" on my wife's Nook. I practically couldn't put it down, and had it finished in only 3 days. When I finished it there was still a few weeks before this one was available for purchase. Immediately I pre-ordered "The Shadow Wars," and marked the calendar. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and pace of the first book, and was thrilled that Rod Rees kept up that pace in this one, too.
Despite a fair number of new characters introduced in this story, I feel the author gave just enough info to let you know why they are significant, without providing a lot of usless details. He also goes back and lets you know briefly what happened to a couple of the main players in the plot from the first book.
This second installment is just as well written as the first, and continues to make you want to turn the next page and get more, more, more! Rod Rees does not fail to provide you with just enough suspense and surprises to keep you from guessing how thing are going to fall into place.
I would say this is one of my favorite book series I've read in years.

I searched for other titles from this author, and found a total of 5. This had me somewhat confused, so I emailed the author, fully expeecting to get someone from the publishing dept, but it turns out Rod Rees emailed me himself! From the limited communication I've had with him, he's a very nice person, he seemed happy to answer my questions, and let me know which books are available in the US. He said The Demi-Monde: Winter and The Shadow Wars are all we have here. In the UK are Winter, Spring and Summer. He also told me that I haven't missed anything by not having the UK editions, and he's just finished the final edit of Fall. I can't wait for the last two to get to me!
